Barbara Eden best known for her iconic role as fun-loving "Jeannie". She was born as Barbara Jean Morehead in Tucson, Arizona. She went on and become one of America's most endearing and enduring actresses. Her career includes starring in more than 25 feature films, 5 network TV series and 19 made for TV movies. Barbara has also appeared on stage, most recently in her one woman show On The Magic Carpet With Barbara Eden.
Film director Mark Robson, "discovered” Barbara when she starred in a play with James Drury. Robson had come to the play and wanted her for 20th Century Fox studios. He later directed her in the movie From the Terrace (1960). Barbara screen tested for a role in No Down Payment (1957). Though the role, was given to Joanne Woodward the studio gave her a contract.
Her last film for 20th Century Fox was The Yellow Canary (1963). After leaving Fox studios (due to budget cuts) she began guest-starring in shows such as I Love Lucy and Gunsmoke, also acting in films for MGM, Universal, and Columbia. She played supporting roles over the next few years, including The Brass Bottle, and 7 Faces of Dr. Lao, both with Tony Randall. In The New Interns, she co-starred with Michael Callan. She signed to play "Jeannie", (1965-1970) a genie in a bottle rescued by an astronaut in the NBC sitcom, I Dream of Jeannie. Eden also played Jeannie's evil sister who lusts for Jeannie's astronaut in eight episodes and Jeannie's hapless mother in at least one.
Barbara has actively supported a variety of charities including the American Heart Association, the American Stroke Association and Neurofibromatosis, Inc. In May of 2013 Barbara donned her iconic pink outfit for Europe’s largest HIV AIDS gala event, The Life Ball in Vienna Austria.
Eden wrote a New York Times best-selling memoir, Jeannie Out of the Bottle, which was released on April 5, 2011, by Crown Archetype, a division of Random House.
Barbara has been honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, A Lifetime Achievement Award from the Broadcasters Hall of Fame and TV Land and named one of TV Guides Most Popular Comedy Stars.
